Painted Bride

A new identity for a legacy arts organization in transition

An AGDA award-winning identity for one of Philadelphia’s most fearless arts nonprofits

Project Overview

In 2022, Painted Bride hit a pivotal point in its evolution. After more than five decades as a Philadelphia arts institution, the organization made the decision to sell its iconic Old City building and double down on its commitment to bring artists’ work into neighborhoods across the city. We partnered with their leadership team to shape what came next: a new brand strategy and identity to match a bold new vision.

The Challenge

Since its founding, Painted Bride had called a historic Philadelphia landmark home — a building covered in mosaics by Isaiah Zagar. It had become so synonymous with the organization that when they decided to sell it, critics assumed they were closing. They weren’t. They were evolving. As the creative brief put it, they wanted to”take back our voice; reaffirm our mission which is NOT to save a wall.” The proceeds from the building sale built an endowment that secured the organization’s future and brought its productions closer to the communities it serves.

The Goal: Identify and document the true soul of Painted Bride in a way that disconnected it from its physical location — freeing it to fully serve its mission.

Our Approach

Our brand strategy engagement crystallized Painted Bride’s mission, solidified its values, and clarified its value proposition. Through a deep discovery process with the leadership team, we surfaced the organization’s core brand archetypes — Creator, Explorer, Lover — and used that framework to develop a brand voice and visual direction that honored their legacy while making unmistakably clear that the Bride is very much alive, and more community-embedded than ever. The tagline we landed on: “Artist Driven, People Powered.”

What We Built

A complete brand foundation built to outlast trends, transitions, and the building it left behind. The new logo evokes the welcoming, expressive, fierce, and forthright tone of the brand, paired with a color palette that represents the power of coming together around artistic expression.

The full deliverable package includes a Brand Book (tagline, mission and vision, elevator pitch, values, brand story, value proposition for artists, brand characteristics, and detailed tone of voice guidance), a Brand Standards document (logo usage, color system, and typography), and Collateral templates.

The five brand characteristics we developed — Grounded, Radically Open, Supportive, Fearless, Vital — now guide every communication the organization produces. The work was recognized with a 2023 American Graphic Design Award for Branding.

The Impact

Since the 2022 rebrand, Painted Bride has continued its evolution from a building-anchored institution into a mobile, community-embedded force in Philadelphia’s cultural life. The organization opened a permanent new home in West Philadelphia in 2025 — a project space at 4029 Cambridge Street in East Parkside designed for artists to work, collaborate, and create alongside their neighbors.

Recent programming themes like Movements. Makers. Memory. have anchored residencies celebrating disabled Philadelphians (Hook&Loop’s Undue Burden) and Black, neurodivergent, and queer artists (Ma’at Works Dance Collective’s something soft) — exactly the kind of identity-driven, community-rooted work the rebrand was built to support. The Philadelphia Inquirer recently described the move as “the Bride’s biggest transformation to date.”

The brand we built gave Painted Bride the strategic and visual foundation to make that transformation visible and credible — positioning the organization not as a venue that closed, but as a living, mobile, artist-led force in Philadelphia’s cultural life.
