Optimize Your Impact

Did you know that only 10% of recycled material in the United States is actually recycled1? We didn’t either. There are a lot of factors that influence this low number, but one of them is simply knowing what materials are recyclable.

As a B Corp, Pixel Parlor is dedicated to promoting sustainable practices. In order to help Philadelphia homes and businesses become smarter recyclers, the studio researched, designed and created a set of recycling and e-waste posters. The posters list the do’s and don’ts of recycling and simple steps to keep single-use plastics and unwanted electronics out of landfills.

Think you’re up to snuff on what is and isn’t recyclable? You might be surprised how many everyday items assumed to be recyclable are NOT. These items include:

  • Waxed paper plates and cups
  • Takeout containers (yes, even pizza boxes!)
  • Plastic bags
  • Styrofoam
  • Straws

  • Paper towels, napkins, and tissues
  • Light bulbs
  • Batteries

A common mystery is what to do with e-waste. Do I leave my old TV, printer, monitor, etc. on the curb and hope for the best? According to the EPA, electronic waste is the source of 70% of all heavy metals found within landfills. This waste contains toxic compounds like mercury and lead  which creates an ongoing risk to our land and water. Surprised? Most people don’t know that e-waste is recyclable if taken to special drop-off centers for safe and proper disposal.

Improve Recycling at Your Workplace or Home

  1. Download the posters, print them out, and hang in common areas around the office or at home near trash and recycling receptacles.
  2. Share this post with your friends, family and co-workers.
  3. Way to go! Sharing information about recycling is one small step that can have a big impact.
